Revelation 6 : The Seven Seal Judgements

“Fall on us and hide us from the face of Him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb! For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?” Rev 6:16

As we study the Tribulation years, we will encounter a God whose judgments intensify with staggering severity — seals, trumpets, and bowls, each wave more devastating than the last. Yet even within this unfolding wrath, we must not lose sight of who is orchestrating it. “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). Every judgment in Revelation, no matter how severe, carries within it an invitation. God is not eager to destroy — He is immensely patient, giving space even in the darkest hours for hardened hearts to turn to Him. As we walk through this study, watch for that thread: judgment and mercy, moving together, until the very end.

CONTEXT

  • Revelation 5 sets the scene: only the Lamb (Christ, “slain” yet standing) is worthy to open the scroll sealed with seven seals.
  • Chapter 6 records the opening of the first six seals; the seventh is delayed until chapter 8.
  • Seals 1–4 are paired (each introduced by one of the “four living creatures” saying “Come and see”), seals 5–6 break the pattern and shift in tone.

The church is now raptured before the seals are opened — placed in the narrative gap between Revelation 3 (end of the letters to the seven churches) and Revelation 4 (John caught up to heaven, “Come up here,” 4:1).

Believers of the church age are removed from the earth before any Tribulation judgment begins (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17; 1 Thessalonians 5:9 — “God did not appoint us to wrath”).

  • The “restrainer” of 2 Thessalonians 2:6–7 is understood as the Holy Spirit indwelling the church; His restraining ministry is removed with the church, allowing the “man of sin” (Antichrist) to be revealed.
  • Everyone present on earth during Revelation 6 is therefore either unbelieving or newly converted after the rapture — the martyrs and multitudes described are Tribulation converts, not raptured church-age believers.
  • Revelation 6 opens Daniel’s seventieth week (Daniel 9:27), a literal seven-year period, with these seals falling in roughly its first half.

Titles

  • “Man of Lawlessness” (2 Thess. 2:3)
  • “Abomination that Causes Desolation” (Dan. 9:27; Matt. 24:15)
  • “The Beast” (Rev. 13)
  • “Little Horn” (Dan. 7:8)

Traits

  • Blasphemes and exalts himself above God; sits in God’s Temple claiming to be God (2 Thess. 2:4; Dan. 9:27)
  • Makes war on the saints; given authority over every nation (Dan. 7:21, 25; Rev. 13:7)
  • Comes as a counterfeit peacemaker — white horse, bow but no arrow (deception before violence) (Rev. 6:2)
  • Wears a given crown — his power is permitted, not inherent (Rev. 6:2)

Timing

  • Rises after the restrainer (Holy Spirit/Church) is removed — linked to the rapture (2 Thess. 2:6-8)
  • Confirms a 7-year covenant, breaks it at the midpoint (Dan. 9:27)
  • Reigns 42 months / 1,260 days in the Great Tribulation (Rev. 13:5)
  • Destroyed by Christ at His return (2 Thess. 2:8; Rev. 19:19-20)

Note: Contrasts with the white horse rider of Rev. 19:11 (Christ) — Antichrist as a counterfeit Christ.

  • Red is the color of terror and carnage
  • Follows directly on the heels of the Antichrist’s false peace — the counterfeit peace collapses, revealing global war and bloodshed
  • Rider is “given” power (again, permitted authority, not independent — God remains sovereign over the unfolding judgment)
  • “Take peace from the earth” — implies a season of relative peace existed under the first seal, now violently ended
  • “Large sword” (Gk. machaira) — often associated with a sword of slaughter/execution rather than a soldier’s battle blade, pointing to civil strife and violent bloodshed, not just international warfare
  • “Make men slay each other” — suggests internal chaos and civil conflict, not merely nation vs. nation

Notes:

  • Since the church has already been removed, this and the following judgments are understood as falling exclusively on those “left behind” — an unbelieving world, plus those who come to faith during this period.
  • Matches Matthew 24:6–7, understood as describing this same post-rapture window (the Olivet Discourse, in this view, applies to the Tribulation generation, not the church).

  • Black — the color of mourning, scarcity, and death by starvation
  • Scales in hand — food rationed and measured out, signaling severe shortage
  • “A quart of wheat for a day’s wage” (Rev. 6:6) — a day’s labor buys only enough grain for one person, one day; equivalent to roughly $200 for a loaf of bread by today’s standard — catastrophic inflation, barely enough to survive
  • “Oil and wine” — idioms for the wealthy/luxury goods; the command “do not damage the oil and the wine” suggests the rich are shielded from the worst of the famine while the poor starve — economic disparity intensifies under judgment
  • War (2nd Seal) leads directly into famine (3rd Seal) — a natural consequence of global conflict disrupting agriculture, trade, and supply chains
  • Reflects Christ’s own words in the Olivet Discourse: “There will be famines…” (Matt. 24:7)

  • “Pale” — Gk. chloros, the sickly, ashen-green color of a corpse; root of “chlorophyll” (pale green)
  • Rider explicitly named Death, with Hades (the realm of the dead) following behind him, ready to receive the slain
  • 4 weapons given to him: sword (war), famine, plague, and wild beasts — a summary/intensification of the judgments already unleashed by the prior three seals, now combined and escalated
  • Scope: authority given over a fourth of the earth to kill by these means — over 1.5+ billion people, given current world population
  • Marks the deadliest and most sweeping seal yet — a dramatic escalation in both method and scale
  • Confirms these are literal, global judgments, not merely symbolic — the numerical proportion (1/4) grounds the vision in real, catastrophic loss of life

  • Unlike the first four seals, this one is not a horse/rider — it shifts scene to souls under the altar, martyrs already slain
  • These are Tribulation saints — people who come to faith during the Tribulation (after the rapture) and are martyred for their testimony
  • Believers die for refusing to worship the Beast or receive his mark (Rev. 13:15-18) — allegiance to Christ costs them their lives
  • They cry out, “How long, Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?” (Rev. 6:10) — a plea for justice, not vengeance out of malice
  • Each is given a white robe (symbolizing righteousness/vindication) and told to rest a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants and brothers, who were to be killed as they had been, was complete (Rev. 6:11)
  • Shows that martyrdom continues and even increases as the Tribulation progresses — the full number of martyrs is appointed by God, under His sovereign timing

Notes:

  • Connects forward to 7:9–17 (the great multitude “who come out of the great tribulation”) and to 20:4, where Tribulation martyrs are specifically distinguished and later reign with Christ.

“I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red…” (Rev. 6:12)

  • Great earthquake — global, not localized; unprecedented in scale
  • Sun turns black — likely from massive volcanic ash/debris blotting out sunlight
  • Moon turns blood red — consistent with heavy atmospheric ash/particulate refracting light (a “blood moon” effect)
  • Stars fall to earth like unripe figs shaken by a gale (v. 13) — often understood as meteor showers/asteroid fragments
  • Sky recedes like a scroll being rolled up (v. 14) — cosmic/atmospheric disruption on a massive scale
  • Every mountain and island removed from its place (v. 14) — implies catastrophic tectonic upheaval, giant tidal waves, reshaping of the earth’s surface
  • Cumulative effect: earthquake, volcanic explosions, meteors/asteroids, and tidal waves converge — creation itself convulses under judgment
  • Response: kings, the powerful, and everyone else hide in caves, calling for the mountains to fall on them rather than face “the wrath of the Lamb” (Rev. 6:15-17) — stark irony that the gentle Lamb is now the object of terror
  • Often placed near the transition into the “Great Tribulation” (the more severe second half of the seven years, cf. Matthew 24:21, Revelation 12).
  • The terrified question “who is able to stand?” is answered in chapter 7: the sealing of 144,000 Jewish witnesses (from the twelve tribes) and the great multitude of Gentile converts — both groups converted during this period, further reinforcing that an entirely new wave of salvation is happening after the church’s departure.
  1. SEAL 1 — WHITE HORSE (Rev. 6:1-2)
How does this rider serve as a counterfeit of Christ, the true rider on a white horse? (Rev.19:11-16)
  2. SEAL 2 — RED HORSE (Rev. 6:3-4)
How does the removal of peace here align with Jesus’s own prediction of “wars and rumors of wars”? (Matt. 24:6-7)
  3. SEAL 3 — BLACK HORSE (Rev. 6:5-6)
What does the command to “not damage the oil and wine” reveal about inequality during this famine?
  4. SEAL 4 — PALE HORSE (Rev. 6:7-8)
How do the four means of death (sword, famine, plague, wild beasts) echo Old Testament judgment language? (Ezek. 14:21)
  5. SEAL 5 — MARTYRS UNDER THE ALTAR (Rev. 6:9-11)
What does their cry, “How long…until you judge?” reveal about the nature of their request — vengeance or justice? (Ps. 79:5, 10)
  6. SEAL 6 — COSMIC DISTURBANCES (Rev. 6:12-17)
How do the cosmic signs here – sun, moon, stars – compare with Old Testament “Day of the Lord” imagery? (Joel 2:30-31; Isa. 13:10)
  1. Knowing that history is moving toward a period of unprecedented judgment, deception, and suffering, how should the certainty of these coming events shape the way you live, witness, and hold onto hope today?
  • Lord, what are You saying to me? And what are You calling me to do about it?
